In 1984 there was a major strike by the Miners and this spilled over and caused the dockers at Hunterston to go on strike too.

This resulted in a huge picket line at the entrance to the British Steel yard with hundreds of pickets and police. The police were deployed to protect the trucks and drivers brought into to transport the coal and ore to Ravenscraig by road.

Many of the truck windows by companies Yuill & Dodds and WH Malcolm were smashed and the drivers abused and called scabs..

There was a lot of violence from both the pickets and police but the police were possibly the most violent and used heady handed tactics.

Whenever reports are shown on tv about the strike all those years ago Hunterston is always shown.
