When the terminal was built it was known as the Hunterston Ore Terminal and operated by British Steel. Soon after Ravenscraig closed down British Steel became Corus and eventually they sold the site.

It was Clydeport that took over the operational side of the site and control all parts of it. Several years later a company called Fergusson Coal took over part of the site to deal in coal processing for domestic and business use.
