The Hunterston High Level part of the railway starts at the bridge crossing Kilruskin Toll, passes the signal box, goes underneath the outloading station and terminates at a halt below the water tank.

The Low level tracks passes between the A78 and the outloading station and makes its way parallel with the main passenger railway line and the A78 before it crosses the A78 at Southanan and curves its way round past the lagoon, underneath the conveyor belts, past the stockyard and terminates at a halt where the former direct reduction plant was once situated.

Part of the low level line used to be double tracked but only one is functional these days while the other is overgrown and abandoned.

Every now and then a special charter train navigates its way to the Low level Halt for train enthusiasts.
