Ore and coal for dispatch by rail are normally conveyed direct from the vessel to the outloading station. The outloading station is situated on sidings linked to the main railway system. the enclosed conveyor line from the terminal discharges into the station's storage bunkers which have a capacity of 2,500 tonnes of coal and 3,500 tonnes of ore.
Materials are then fed into their respective weight hoppers under which the trains are marshaled for loading. Ore for Ravenscraig works was carried in 100 tonnes gross rotary coupled wagons. A train of 21 wagons can be loaded in less than 30 minute
Since the closure of Ravenscraig and British Steel the operations was bought by Clydeport who now only import and transport coal by rail.
